Overview
Tregoyd offers some of the finest high pheasant and partridge shooting in Wales, set in a spectacular position directly beneath the Black Mountains and just a few miles from Hay-on-Wye. Combining exceptional sport with luxurious on-estate accommodation, it provides a complete country shooting experience in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the UK. The estate extends across approximately 3,000 acres of outstanding countryside between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. Its varied topography is central to the quality of the shooting, with steep rolling grass banks, deep rocky valleys, woodland rides, and open parkland all contributing to a diverse and challenging sporting day. Whether it is fast, high partridges, towering pheasants over woodland edges, or birds lifting high above ancient trees, Tregoyd delivers sport to suit all abilities while consistently maintaining a high standard of presentation. The estate prides itself on running a traditional and well-managed shoot, with a strong emphasis on safety, organisation, and hospitality throughout the day.
A Day In The Field
day at Tregoyd begins at the comfortable shoot lodge, where coffee is served on arrival and pegs are drawn for the day ahead. Guests are welcomed before heading out to the first drive, with the aim of being on position by around 9.30am. The day typically consists of four morning drives across the estate’s varied ground, making full use of the steep valleys, woodland rides, and open hillsides that define the shooting. After a mid-morning refreshment break in the field, the morning sport continues with consistently high-quality birds presented at height and speed. Guests then return to the lodge for a relaxed lunch, enjoying excellent hospitality in a traditional country house setting. After lunch, a final drive completes the sporting day. The experience concludes with afternoon tea while final scores are tallied by the Head Keeper, providing a fitting end to a well-structured and traditional shoot day. Throughout the season, Tregoyd offers driven days ranging from 150 to 500 birds, with full on-site accommodation available in a beautiful country house surrounded by gardens and parkland, offering exclusive use for visiting parties (subject to availability).
About The Area
Tregoyd is set within one of the most scenic and unspoilt parts of Wales, lying directly beneath the Black Mountains and close to the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This is a landscape defined by scale and drama, where rugged peaks give way to rolling foothills, deep valleys, and open farmland. The nearby town of Hay-on-Wye is renowned for its independent character, literary culture, and strong connection to rural life, offering a charming contrast to the wild surrounding countryside. The wider region is rich in walking, riding, and outdoor pursuits, with endless access to trails, ridges, and panoramic viewpoints across mid and south Wales. This combination of dramatic upland scenery and accessible market towns makes the area both remote in feel and highly welcoming for visiting Guns and their guests.
