A Day In The Field
A day at Campo Frio in Portugal is a true taste of traditional driven shooting in classic Iberian countryside. The day typically begins with a relaxed Portuguese breakfast, enjoyed in good company as the light comes up over the surrounding landscape. Strong coffee, fresh bread, pastries, and local produce set the tone for the day ahead. After breakfast, guests meet the loaders and ground team, go through a full safety briefing, and select from a well-maintained selection of hire guns if needed. There’s time to get comfortable, ask questions, and settle into the rhythm of the estate before heading out. The shooting is structured around four drives. The first two drives are usually shot in the morning, typically starting from around 11’s, offering fast-paced action over varied terrain and well-presented birds. After a short break, the final two drives follow, rounding out a full and satisfying day in the field. Lunch is taken either in the field or back at the lodge, depending on the day and conditions. It’s a relaxed, generous spread of traditional Portuguese food, accompanied by wine and refreshments, giving everyone time to unwind and share stories from the morning’s sport. On a typical day at Campo Frio teams shoot 500 birds, delivering consistent, high-quality sport while maintaining a traditional and well-managed shooting experience. As the day draws to a close, there’s time to unwind, reflect on the shooting, and enjoy the atmosphere that makes Campo Frio such a memorable destination.
About The Area
Penamacor sits in Portugal’s Beira Baixa region, close to the Spanish border, and is one of those quietly spectacular areas that still feels genuinely untouched. Rolling hills, cork oak forests, and wide open farmland define the landscape, with the Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve on its doorstep bringing a real sense of wilderness and biodiversity. This is classic inland Portugal — warm, dry summers, crisp winters, and big skies that stretch for miles. The terrain is a mix of rugged scrub, stone-walled fields, and scattered woodland, making it ideal country for traditional rural pursuits. It’s also an area steeped in history, with Penamacor’s hilltop castle and old stone villages reflecting centuries of borderland heritage. For those visiting, it offers a slow, authentic pace of life. Local food is simple and excellent — think game, olive oil, cheeses, and robust regional wines. Wildlife is abundant, and the sense of space and quiet is one of its defining features. Penamacor is best understood as a place where time moves differently — remote, atmospheric, and deeply rooted in the landscape of inland Portugal.
